Island time

Not in Kansas anymore Toto.

So I am adjusting to Island Time. This morning I was supposed to meet up with my attending for orientation. When we got there she was not there and no one knew where she was or when she was coming back. We tried to get some paper work done and some logistical things but the contact that I was supposed to meet up with we could not get hold of. (Maurilee and me)

So after officially registering as a student at the University of West Indies
I ended up here with Maurilee. Pathology class. It was a good review but brought back horrible horrible memories.
Finally we got on our way with my right contact and met up with my attending at OG. I got a great schedule and looks like I will be seeing a lot of gyn! Which is great! I hopefully then will be spending one week at the public hospital for obstetrics. Apparently, that is where all the action is.

OG department building. This is not the hospital. The hospital is behind the building. It is only about 2 floors and they have seperate buildings for the SICU, Radiology, Peds etc. Basically separate buildings for each department connected by outside walkways. We build up, they build out and around. Much cooler it seems.
The afternoon was spent with logistical stuff which was quite interesting. First, off to get some lunch. I had this strange yet wonderfully delicious sandwhich which consisted of smoked marlian, some sort of jelly, cream cheese and lettuce. It was so yummy! Then we exchanged money, got a SIM card from Digicel, and went on a hunt for a white coat for Alicia. Here students are responsible for getting their white coats. Well, the women are actually. The male students get to wear a button down white dress shirt. Most women have thier white coats custom made and not "ready made." However, Alicia wanted a ready made coat. We had to look everywhere and finally found this medical supply store. Where you can also buy....

...Gomco clamps for circumcisions.
...Electric cautery for surgery.

We then went to try and find a phone for me. We ended up buying one after mine did not work and her friend was not home with the spare. It was quite an ordeal actually but now I am official. I have a digicel. I am practically Jamaican.
Tomorrow I am off to the gyn clinic at 8am and then Thursday I am meeting up with UMDNJ group for their clinics in the community. Friday back for ward rounding on the obstetric floor.
This saturday I potential will be hiking the blue mountians and on sunday: CARNIVAL!!! It should be interesting....
