I made it out to carnival! It was not quite what I expected on account of The Rain. There has been a huge drought here in Jamaica for a couple of months now and the government has been rationing water on a schedule to neighborhoods. Of course, the moment that we decide to stand outside for a couple of hours the skies open up and DOWNPOUR. We got absolutely soaked. The carnival band (parade) ended up a bit disjointed as everyone was dropping out due to the drenching rain.
Here we are braving the wind and rain.
The band getting ready to come around.
It was hard to get some good shots because of the rain. I was afraid of ruining my camera for the rest of the trip. But here is what I could get hovering under Ayanna's umbrella.
Below are two short clips.
After hanging out for about a hour, freezing, soakws through and through we decided(they really, I just go along with everything) to pick up some pizza and head back to Rochelle's house to eat and relax. It was really nice to sit back and get to know them a bit more. We had tea and fried bake with buljol. (salted cod with various veggies and spice) and trinidad fudge. Fried Bake (the dough thing) and buljol (the topping)
The fudge. It is hard, very sweet, crumbly and melts instantly in your mouth.
I also tried naseberry today. Another Jamaican fruit. I am not too sure I like this one. The flavor is... different.
The color is really beautiful though!
So that was my first carnival experience. Ayanna admits that it was kinda a flop and invited me to participate in the Trinidad one in Feb. Maybe I will take her up on it!
Tomorrow- ward rounding on ward 12 with Dr. Simmons-Stewart!
